Free MTS 2 MPEG Converter Lite claims to be able to convert any MTS video into an MPEG file that you can then use to author your own DVD. The program’s interface is extremely simple and straightforward, allowing you to select and convert one MTS file at a time. No settings or configuration options have been implemented, making it suitable for all types of users.
Regrettably, it does not seem to be suitable for all types of MTS files. In order to review this free utility as thoroughly as possible, various MTS files – recorded using different video cameras – were used. However, the program was unable to open any of them, let alone convert them into MPEG. The MTS source files used were recorded using standard Sony, Panasonic, and Canon equipment, and though they played beautifully in various well-known video players (VLC, Windows Media Player, etc.), none of them passed the program’s compatibility test. After each unsuccessful attempt, an error window would pop up asking you to try the “advanced tool” required to convert such sophisticated MTS files. This “advanced” version of the program needs to be downloaded separately, and it is no longer a free utility. Pity.
